In a Persian Market: intermezzo-scene (1A)                                                                   Back to list of works index

The work was first advertised as a piano piece in Musical Opinion (January 1921) under
the heading "Educational novelties”.
The orchestral version was published 6 months later.  It is an easy piece to play well, and has
always been popular with groups of all standards.  Many diverse performances can be seen on
YouTube, but only a few of the more interesting versions are indexed
below.  The variety of melodies is
particularly attractive to Wurlitzer organists. A clip of Betty (of Wilson,
Keppel and Betty) dancing to it can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srLc6dTsewM.  The Two Ronnies used it in their Sultan’s
Harem sketch at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JvQKobVXq4

Its use in a
music-and-movement class in a German primary school is described in the article
Auf einem Persischen
Market: ein Hit der Salonmusik
wird zum Hit im Unterricht, by Lothar
Schubert (Musik in der Schule, 1997
Heft 1, p.15-19).

The work is a
basically a string of melodies, or pot-pourri.  However, material is recapitulated in a
manner vaguely resembling sonata form.
The piece begins and ends like a patrol (crescendo as the patrol
approaches, diminuendo as it disappears, c.f. Beethoven’s Turkish March)
– but Ketèlbey has a Haydnesque surprise with the unexpected
final loud chord.

Unlike In a
Monastery Garden, with its sophisticated harmony and a religious aura, the
simple diatonic and pentatonic melodies of In a Persian Market have
proved a good starting point for jazz musicians.

Composer’s synopsis for his
1928 recording.
The camel-drivers enter the market, the cries
of beggars for "Back-Sheesh" are heard, the princess arrives carried
by her servants (this theme is repeated by full orchestra), she stays to watch
the jugglers and snake-charmer.  The Caliph
announced by trumpets, now passes through the market, the beggars again cry out
for "Back-Sheesh", the princess departs, the caravan resumes its
journey, but everything is stilled for a few moments by the voice from the
minaret calling to prayer; the caravan moves off, and the market place becomes
deserted.
NB.
The minaret music was never published, but two different versions were included
in his own recordings.

The details for Fiedler’s
versions are confused.  Apart from the
two on this webpage, there is third dating from 1958.
New Empire Orchestra (Decca K
523) contains only a fragment of this piece.
The scoring to this work is
very straightforward, and the main differences in these early recordings are
the cuts needed to fit the limit of a 78rpm side.  In the table below there is no chorus except
where noted.
| Artists | Notes | Click here |
| Alex and Richard | Accordions with strings,
 piccolo, clarinet & percussion.
 Mean-sounding beggars.
| American Concert Orchestra   | Tom-tom sounds like
 chopping wood. | https://adp.library.ucsb.edu/index.php/matrix/detail/2000157420/10563-In_a_Persian_market
 |
| Brunswick Concert Orchestra | Small orchestra. With a
 couple of beggars. | http://archive.org/details/AKetelbyFestival-5CutsFrom1927-1930 |
| Dobrindt / Grosses Odeon-Orchester | Replaces the beggars with
devout worshippers calling “Allah” – but I have heard Moroccan beggars saying
just the one word “Allah”. | (2-20459) https://archive.org/details/78_14606-Sur-un-marche-persan

| Durand | New arrangement in modernist style
 resembling Stravinsky.
| Fiedler (1937, 6’36”) | Complete with full
 orchestra, but no chorus.
| Fiedler (1950, 6’04”) | Complete with full
orchestra. With wordless chanting by the orchestra.
| Gandino | Very busy market-place,
with much shouting which often obscures the music. Beggars sound suitably
miserable. With piano. First statement of Princess theme shared between solo
cello and violin. Reprise of this theme doubled by tenor voice singing
 without words. | |
| Godwin | Small orchestra with
 Wurlitzer. | |
| Hollywood String Orchestra | Lush new arrangement for
full orchestra, omitting Camel-drivers and Beggars.
| Ketèlbey (1922) | 6 cuts. Small orchestra
with tuba as bass, just one Beggar. Cello omitted from first statement of
 Princess theme.  | |
| Ketèlbey (1924) | 1 cut. Smallish
 orchestra.  Beggars singing almost with
Received Pronunciation. Adds melismatic passage for unaccompanied tenor voice
interpolated, later used as the Eastern Song melody in Algerian
 Song/Scene.  | |
| Ketèlbey (1926) | 1 cut. Full orchestra.
Beggars sound earnest and slightly apologetic. Slows greatly towards end,
inserting different call from the minaret for unaccompanied tenor.  | Columbia 3422R
 (labelled 1927) |
| Ketèlbey (1928) | Complete, full orchestra,
Beggars sound confident first time, slightly disappointed second time. Minaret call is
 accompanied by tom-tom.
| Ketèlbey (1940) | 7 cuts.  Full orchestra. Beggars sound
 apologetic.  Cello omitted from first
statement of Princess theme; a later statement is with tenor solo and
 male chorus, singing "Dreamy eyes…" |   |
| Muscant (Regal) | Complete, with chorus. Very
 thin sound. | Side 1. https://archive.org/details/78_in-a-persian-market-del-1-the-commodore-grand-orchestra-dir-joseph
